I Tried Uber's New $18 Shuttle to LaGuardia so You Don't Have To

For New York travelers tired of choosing between budget-crushing Uber rides and labyrinthine public transit to LaGuardia Airport, Uber's new $18 Shuttle service promises a golden middle ground - but the real question is whether the compromises involved in this innovative solution make it worth your while.

In a city where airport transportation options often feel like choosing between convenience and cost, Uber's new Shuttle service to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) aims to bridge that gap. Launched in October 2024, this fixed-route shuttle service promises to offer a middle ground between public transit's affordability and private rides' convenience. After a recent firsthand experience, here's a comprehensive look at what travelers can expect.

Booking

Uber has integrated the Shuttle booking process seamlessly into their existing app interface. It appears as if Uber doesn't actually run the shuttles themselves, but rather subcontracts this out to Ellis Transportation Service, Inc. who markets this shuttle as "Uber Shuttle." Users can reserve seats up to seven days in advance, with shuttles running every 30 minutes between 5 AM and 11 PM.

The process is straightforward: select your pickup and drop-off locations, choose the "Shuttle" option, and book up to four seats. At $18 per person, it positions itself as a compelling alternative to both public transit and private rides.

Pickup

My journey began at the pickup point just east of Grand Central Terminal, near the Pershing Square Park Avenue overpass (Just across the street from the Hyatt Grand Central). The app provides real-time tracking starting 25 minutes before pickup, and Uber recommends arriving five minutes early – advice worth heeding, as drivers wait only two minutes at each stop.

The vehicle itself was impossible to miss: a branded Sprinter van wrapped in Uber Shuttle livery. While visually appealing, the van's interior revealed some limitations. With 13 seats packed into the cabin, space was at a premium.

The Ride

The journey came with some unexpected rules and challenges. Passengers must discard all food and beverages before boarding – a potentially frustrating requirement for those, like myself, who just purchased their morning coffee. At 6'4", legroom was severely limited, and even passengers of average height (5'7" and above) might find the seating tight.

Luggage handling follows a straightforward system: one piece of checked-size luggage (up to 50 lbs) goes in the back, while personal items must stay on your lap. The driver, while friendly and professional, strictly enforced these policies.

Arrival

The shuttle drops passengers at Terminal C's bus area on the first floor, below the arrivals level. For departing flights, this means navigating two escalators to reach the check-in area – a detail worth considering when planning your arrival time. For those heading to Terminal B, the shuttle makes an additional stop, though Terminal A is not served by this route.

My Thoughts

The introduction of Uber Shuttle addresses a long-standing challenge in New York City's airport transportation landscape. While public transit options exist – including the LaGuardia Link Bus from various Queens subway and LIRR stations – they often involve multiple transfers and considerable travel time. The much-discussed AirTrain project, similar to JFK's system, remains unrealized due to budget constraints.

At $18, Uber Shuttle positions itself between the $2.90 public transit fare and private Uber rides that typically start at $40-50. While tipping isn't explicitly required or prompted in the app, some passengers may choose to tip their drivers (as I did, offering $5 for the service).

Uber Shuttle successfully fills a crucial gap in LaGuardia's transportation options. Despite some comfort limitations and strict policies, it offers a reliable, cost-effective solution for travelers who prioritize predictability over luxury. The service particularly shines for solo travelers or small groups who want to avoid the complexity of public transit without paying premium ride-share prices.

For budget-conscious travelers who value their time, Uber Shuttle represents a welcome addition to New York's airport transportation options. While not without its compromises, the service delivers on its core promise: providing a reliable, affordable alternative for getting to and from LaGuardia Airport.
